Going to Pieces

(work in progress)
Description:  Going to Pieces is an exhibition that combines performance, tangible, new media, and conceptual art into an exploration of the cycle of creation, fragmentation and integration. As the exhibition unfolds, members of the public are invited to engage in an act of both destruction and transformation, becoming co-creators of the artwork.

Part I: Tangible

The artist initiates the process by creating a large physical art work in a form and for a performance space of her choosing.

Part II: Participation & Performance

Upon entering the exhibition, visitors experience the piece as a whole, which is offered for sale. The artist, maintaining silence, is positioned next to a table that includes: a menu with various dimensions and prices, art mats that correspond to the dimensions on offer, and a selection of cutting tools.

Those wishing to make a purchase
select the size they desire, choose a cutting implement from those available and  extract the section they wish to buy.

The artist authentically witnesses the process without speaking, acknowledging whatever arises in each moment, including any conflicted emotions that come as she watches the piece transform.
As participants cut out their chosen portions, the original work fades, transformed with each incision.

Part III: In Tatters & Yet Whole

A new tangible work is created by what remains when the exhibition comes to a close, with all the participants credited as co-artists. This new work stays under the stewardship of the primary artist, who will make determinations about any future exhibition, usage, and sales.

Part IV: Conceptual

Everyone who attends is invited to take part in an imaginal process via a set of written instructions displayed in the exhibition space, during which they envision where all the fragments may go and a future reunion of all the dispersed pieces.

Part V: Creative Homecoming

At a point to be determined in the future, co-artists will be invited to participate in the re-construction of a third tangible work by bringing or sending a contribution that matches the dimensions of the portion they cut to the original artist. This might include the actual piece they chose, a reproduction of it, or something else entirely, born of their own creative impulses.

Documentation

Still and moving images meticulously record the evolution of the canvas as fragments are claimed and
removed; participants are encouraged to share images of their transformed pieces via new media venues of their choosing; interviews with buyers on their experience; still and moving images of the entire exhibition.

Each co-artist participant receives a portfolio for their chosen piece which contains a certificate of authenticity signifying their collective ownership of the artwork. It also includes a space to print and affix images of the original canvas and its form before and after their cut. These images are shared via text to make it easy to share if they choose, with high resolution images delivered via email.
